Reading 1 Jon 3:1-10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’s bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,” when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes. Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: “Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.  Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish.” When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19

R. (19b) A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
For you are not pleased with sacrifices;
should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

Gospel Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.  At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

HOMILY

And so, katulad ng isang German na Benedict XVI, he must have told himself, "This is not just a question of reigning." But it is a question of effectively governing. Iba 'yon.

Samantalang 'yong iba, basta nandiyan ka sa tuktok, wala kang kahihiyan, kahit wala kang karapatan, hindi talaga matanggal ang iyong pagkakahawak - ano'ng tawag do'n - kapit tuko, this message is a resounding message to say, "Hoy, hindi gano'n." You are there to effectively govern. And if you cannot handle that anymore, let it go. And let someone else who can do the job better, do it for you.

For which reason, we have to salute the Pope. Sapagkat sa isang taong binigyan ng kapangyarihan, hawak na niya, he is willing to let go, and to simply fade into the picture, so that someone else can do the job more effectively, than he can now.

Si Jonas ay isang propheta. And I will tell you of four signs of a true prophet.

Ang amin pong founder (referring to Blessed Giacomo Alberione, founder of the Society of St. Paul), isang dakilang tao at isang blessed na rin ng simbahan, when he was asked, "Write about yourself." "I was just a brush in the hand of the Great Painter. I was just a pen in the hand of the Great Writer." Hindi ako - instrumento lang ako. Ginamit ako ng Panginoon. At alam kong wala akong karapatan. I am unworthy.

And so a true prophet does not feel good about himself. Alam niyang wala siyang karapatan. In short, all of us are not indispensable, in the salvation of people. Only God is indispensable.

And many times, these are the people that the Lord will choose because they recognize, wala silang karapatan. It's God who chooses whom He wants.

In fact, they also understand that their business is not to be successful. They know that. Their business is to be faithful.

And this brings us to the third sign of a true prophet. And what is that? A true prophet suffers. Why? Because you are there to make a difference in the lives of people. You are like a light introduced into darkness. And those in there who are doing things in the darkness, will not want to bring in the light. Ang reaksiyon nila sa ilaw - hipan ito. Patayin n'yo. Why? Because they do not want to see the ugliness of what they are doing.

A true prophet is salt of the earth, because he is supposed to make the difference. And others will tell you, the one who brings in the truth to a world of lies, will not be popular at all. They will persecute you. And like your master, they may even crucify you. That is why a beautiful sign of a true prophet is when he suffers. Alam n'yo mga kapatid, sabi nga nila, when a prophet is making it so good, that he has everything and enjoys it, magduda na kayo kung 'yan ay tunay na propheta. The true prophet is one who suffers because he stands for the truth, so that we can receive the light in a dark world.

The fourth sign is this. A true prophet does not seek the pleasure of men, or to please man. His one joy is that he pleases God. Kaya paulit-ulit ko pong sinasabi ito. Sabi ni Bishop Bacani sa aming mga pari, we are supposed to be mouthpieces of God. "Sana pagpunta n'yo at kayo'y biglang napalakpakan ng mga taong kausap n'yo, pag-uwi n'yo, kausapin n'yo si Lord. Lord, kanina pumapalakpak sila. "You have been repaid.

My dear friends, my brothers and sisters, we are anticipating the coming of a new Pope. But we are truly, truly joyful that Pope Benedict XVI makes one final act to tell the world that one's position is not important. Eh German 'yan. They are very functional. And if they could not function anymore, it's so easy for them to let go of the position.

It is a convincing declaration to say na ikaw na ang kanilang napusuan.

Meron talaga noon. (laughs) Napasok ko na 'yon. Do'n pwede kang magwala, "Lord, bakit ako?"

Marius the First. (more laughs)

This time, puti na.

"Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!" I bring you good news. We have a new Pope. Kaya tatlong araw na ako nagpapa-praktis (laughs)....just in case....

Isa lang ang alam ko. May topak ang magnanais maging Santo Papa. (laughs) Mga kapatid, ipagdasal natin si Cardinal Tagle. Ako, hindi ko lang alam, but I have a gut feeling. He may become the next Pope. Ipagdasal natin. We pray that whoever is chosen may truly have the heart of a shepherd, with the love of God in His heart, and love for his people. Amen.
